Paramore: 26 Meaning
Song Released: 2017
26 Lyrics
Everything was fine until you came around
I've been chasing after dreamers in the clouds
After all wasn't I the one who said
To keep your feet on the ground?
Man, you really brought me back...
-
i think this song is about how she fantasized the “perfect” relationship, she became the girl she sang about in brick by boring brick and in this song she’s singing about how someone brought her back down (“man you really brought me back down”) and took her away from the fantasy and in brick by boring brick words “buried the castle” it also can relate to how she sings about never wanting to fall in love and go through a heart break like her parents did, when you say you never want to fall in love you tend to fantasize love more, she probably fantasized love and the other person didn’t live up to the fantasy and she ended up going through a heartbreak just like her parents. after the heartbreak it seems like she lost hope and it seems like her song is a message, how she talks about holding on to hope and never letting it go for anybody. it also seems like after becoming the girl in brick by boring brick she wants to go back hence the lyrics “ they say that dreaming is free but i wouldn’t care what it cost me” the next lyrics are “reality will break your heart survival will not be the hardest part it’s keeping all your hopes alive when all the rest of you have died” this relates to verse two in brick by boring as she gets hurt and the lyrics tell the girl to build her home brick by boring brick or the wolf will blow it down meaning to keep reality strong or stay in reality cuz once you go to fantasy and go back to reality it will break you and survival won’t be the hardest part just like she says keeping your hopes alive will be. overall i think this is a very deep song and it has a great meaning.

In my opinion, Hayley wrote the song as a message to her younger self, and several elements of the song prove this statement to be true. Including the title of the song, (26), and a specific lyric in the first verse. The title references the age she was when she became engaged to her ex-husband, Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory. There is also a lyric in the first verse that referenced one of the band's older songs. The lyric was, "I've been chasing after dreamers in the clouds, after all wasn't I the one who said to keep your feet on the ground." This lyric pays homage to a lyric in their 2009 song, "Brick by Boring Brick" The lyric was, "Keep your feet on the ground, when your head's in the clouds." I believe that Hayley put this lyric in "26" because she became the girl she was singing about in "Brick by Boring Brick" But I also think that the song also has a connection to their song, "The Only Exception" more than anything else. "The Only Exception" was also written about Chad, who at the time, was actually Hayley's boyfriend. Hayley wrote the song about her struggles with self isolation and the idea that true love doesn't exist. When she was younger, her parent's had suffered from a divorce, and in the song she mentioned not wanting the same thing to happen to her, which, sadly, it did.

i feel like hayley wrote this to her depression at 26/ her younger self. but to me, this song makes me feel like it could be a message to my ex. he really brings me down a lot, emotionally abusive even though we are not together anymore. but, i believe he can grow and learn, the chorus is where id be telling him to keep going and grow. idk just how i think about it
