It seems the songwriter was conveying the fact that, for every decision we make in our lives, there is a consequence. Realistically, there are only 2 choices we have in life
The spirit of a bit seems to be a 'gung ho' 'all guns blazing' kind of approach to life. Look after number one, act first, think later.
The wisdom of a man however, seems to be a decision made after weighing up the consequences and it's effect on others, not just a temporary result for yourself.
It's a great attitude to have in life.
