REM: Oh my Heart Meaning
Song Released: 2011
Oh my Heart Lyrics
a new take on faith
pick up the pieces
get carried away
i came home to city half erased
i came home to face what we faced
this place needs me here to start
this place is the beat of my heart

The depth of the song is revealed in not the physical changes of New Orleans but the loss of the memories Stipe had connected to pre-Katrina New Orleans. It was special to him, and now it's gone. And in the memories that were physically reduced to rubble, so were was his life - and him as well, symbolically died in that disaster.
This song is an extension of the phrase "You can't go home again." While it traditionally refers to a childhood hometown, this song shows it can mean a lot about a place you came of age or other personal development that's now long gone.
