In my opinion, this song is about being hopelessly drawn to someone who isn't right for you, doesn't respect you, but somehow connects with a broken part of you that you can't escape. Time with them is exquisite, but you understand that it's screwed up and you'll probably get hurt. Loving a narcissist is like this, fluctuating between delicious love bombing and sudden awful behavior that makes you feel insignificant and stupid.

My understanding is completely different from what I’ve read so far. It seems to me that this song was written about someone he treated so badly that he deserves nothing better than the foul things he suggests, which would strip him of everything he values and humiliate him immeasurably. He’s filled with remorse of an inconsolable, irretrievable level.
