I believe he is singing about a dog he had to have put to sleep and buried under a tree in a place she liked. Terms like 'those pleading eyes' and 'my little friend' strongly suggest to me it's about a dog and not a human.

Not 100% sure on this, but my interpretation of this song is that a person has someone close to them, like their child, on their deathbed, and ones mind drift into their hopefully happy past, and that parting with your loved ones is allways hard and painfull
