Songs like any creative writing often have multiple meanings and are kept intentionally ambiguous so others can find their own meaning. Knowing what we do about Chris, though, I think it covers addiction, depression, and suicide or death from the addiction. However you want to call it, this is an amazing song. You are missed Chris.
