Seasons in the Sun Lyrics

Goodbye to you, my trusted friend.
We've known each other since we're nine or ten.
Together we climbed hills or trees.
Learned of love and ABC's,
skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.
Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die,
when all the...

it is a good song it is not a suicide letter it is about his best friend and about who he loved before he died even though he did not die because he is 72 and he lives in Canada

I learned a while ago that this song was to represent a boy (young man) who was going off to Vietnam. Not a suicide note or a man in prison. It was to say good-bye to those who meant something to him throughout life because he knew he was going off to die.

I know the Jacques Brel song. It is a list of his grievances against the people mentioned. It has nothing like the meaning Terry Jacks gives it. Look it up.

When I 1st heard this song I thought it was about a man in a death row prison cell but later interpreted it to be about a terminally ill person. ♣

I think it's a great song. I used to listen to it over and over on a 45 when I was a little kid. Although I did not understand what it meant I still loved it. But I don't think his friend was a dog a dog can't learn his abcs.( remember learn to love and abcs) I may be wrong. But it's just a song.

I remember this song from years back. On Monday we had our dog put down as she was riddled with mass cell tumors and for some strange reason 'Seasons in the sun' popped into my head. Been humming it ever since and somehow it's soothing this incredible heartbreak I'm going through.

It is about Loki approaching Ragnarok and knowing his death will come certain.

Goodbye to you my trusted friend(Odin)
we've known each other since we were 9 or 10 (which are both holy numbers in Eddic literature.)
Together we climbed hills and trees
    Learned of love and ABC's
Skinned our hearts and skinned are knees
(clear references to Odin's Rune Poem)
Goodbye Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
    Wonder how I got along
(Odin often had to plea that the other Gods not harm Loki and find ways for Loki to make amends for his actions)
Goodbye Papa, it’s hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky Now that the spring is in the air
    Little children everywhere
When you see them I'll be there
(Loki had several children who were considered Giants and were to battle alongside him in Ragnarok)
Goodbye Michelle, my little one(Mich is a Germanic pronunciation for my and Hel was Loki's daughter)
You gave me love and helped me find the sun And every time that I was down
    You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground(Hel was also the Goddess of the Underworld and had the power to bring men back from the dead)
Goodbye Michelle it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky Now that the spring is in the air
    With the flowers everywhere
I wish that we could both be there(The Eternal Spring is what comes after Ragnarok and is the rebirth of Humanity with the surviving Gods)

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

When this song came out, my 9year old cousin died, her name was Michelle and she was the black sheep in her family [onlygirl]. I always think of her.

    its a suicide letter.
he talks about how the stars for which they reached were just starfish on the beach. the vanity of reaching out for dreams and goals. its almost as if he is mocking life and death
