The Cat Empire: The Car Song Meaning
The Car Song Lyrics
And it's sunny in the park
I'll stay here with my beer and fish and chips till it gets dark
I've got a lot of homework
But homework he can wait
I never start my homework till its already too late
My parents say...

This song is about growing up and being told what to do by your parents, teachers and other adults. Harry sings about how his parents and teachers wanted him to be a lawyer but he didn't try to hard, he forgot his homework and thought more about the girl he was sitting next to during a test rather then the actual test. He just thinks there is nothing better to do than sit at his piano and write songs and then think about what he could do. when he is older he runs into a classmate from that year and finds how the guy's got his life made with a great job, a good car and going out with the before mentioned girl.
at first I thought the song was telling you to do well in school but I realized that look where Harry is now, He is a famous song writer, trumpeter and singer in an awesome band.
So, really the song is saying, do what your good at.
