Clouds Crash Lyrics

Clouds crash on the hillside.

Set to sail your soul at high tide.

High time you left that shadow,

Dead weight in the meadow.

Let it follow far below.

Oh, Oh, Oh

Whoa, what a ceiling!

All the angels cracked and...

I think Shawn is talking to a girl who used to be totally in love with him. And he's telling her he knew so things are kind of awkward but they manage to smooth things out.

"Clouds crash on the hillside, set to sail your soul at high tide. High time you left that shadow; dead weight in the meadow. Let it follor far below."
--It seems to be painting a scene. It's a coudy day when he's telling her these things and the clouds are low over the hillside. He's saying it seems to be time to let the past go because it's holding her down and let it simply be a memory and not affect her anymore.

"Oh, oh, oh, whoah, what a ceiling! All the angels cracked and peeling"
--this is a reference to an old church in Oakland (where The Matches are from) that has angels painted on the celing but the painting is coming apart

"revealing constellations, one day you will name one after a boy you knew when you were back in middle school and engraved his name in love notes; every one retained though in a box behind your rain coats."
--stars are always something people look up to see and are something that are always taken for granted to always be there. They make the constellations that the girl is seeing. On her mind is the boy she liked back in middle school (him possibly). He's saying the boy is always on her mind and because of this she'll some day name a constellation of her own creation after him. She was so in love with this boy way back when, and she keeps the memories of him in a small corner of her mind.

"Oh those days where rainy days meant traces, faces raindrops made when racing cross the windshiel. Pace of life wasn't real"
--remembering when they were kids and sitting in the car on a rainy day trying ot pass the time by tracing the raindrops on the windshield. Life seemed to go by so slowly, but now it seems like time had passed them by.

"Oh though how we quicken, how the slope began to slicken. You slip into a grin and begin with where you've been and in my linen you are skin again."
--Him being the guy she was so in love with makes her shy around him now. She still kind of likes him obviously and she now knows he knew. As they're sitting on this rainy day and remembering, she can't help but smile and start telling him about what she's been up to since then. Being able to let go of the past she is free when she's with him now.
