They Might Be Giants: No One Knows My Plan Meaning
No One Knows My Plan Lyrics
I was careless
I can see that now
I must be silent
Must contain my secret smile
I want to tell you
you my mirror
you my iron bars
When I made a shadow on my window shade
They called the police and...

This song helped me fall in love with the works of Socrates. The lyrics speak of a man in jail for what the neighbors saw as a shadow on the window shade.
The reference to the Allegory of the Cave is a story in which people are chained down and only allowed to see shadows on the wall. They are told they themselves are shadows, and they come to believe the entire world is made of shadows. One of the people escapes and discovers the sun. He tries to free his former fellow captives, but they refuse to believe him, comfortable as they are believing the world is made of shadows. The allegory is about the search for truth and the source of truth.
The song, then, speaks about how no one understands what is really going on, and how he must keep his future plans a secret.
