Legend is about Tyler's grandfather who unfortunately passed away. the song is a pretty short one but when he says " you were here when i wrote this" it means he started working on either the album trench or the song legend for his grandpa before he died but as tyler says "the masters and mixes will take too long to finish to show you" by now Tyler means that his grandpa couldnt live to see the day it was released. also tyler says "did not know how to take it that your eyes did not know me like i know you" Tyler's grandpa suffered from Alzheimers so what that part means is that Tyler knew who he was but his grandpa didnt know who tyler was. also his grandpa's name was robert and thats tylers middle name as mentioned in the chorus.
