All Time Low: A Love Like War Meaning
Song Released: 2013
A Love Like War Lyrics
Have a smoke
Pour a drink
Steal a kiss in the dark
Fingernails on my skin
Like the teeth of a shark
I'm intoxicated by the lie
In the chill of your stare
I am painfully lost
Like a deer...

#1 top rated interpretation:The song A Love Like War is about a couple that is in a destructive relationship. Both the parties in the relationship try to make their love work, but ultimately know that they love each other for the wrong reasons. This is shown in the line, “Make a wish on our sorry little hearts.” They both know they are in an unhealthy relationship, which in turn, causes them stress. They try to mask the stressfulness of their situation and relationship by attempting to forget them in the line, “Have a smoke, pour a drink.” The next few words, “steal a kiss in the dark,” shows that the couple is blinded of their lack of relationship and keep their true feelings hidden in the dark. The man is not quite sure how to act in front of the woman as shown in the line, “In the chill of your stare I am painfully lost, like a deer in the lights of an oncoming bus.” This shows that they are both almost cold hearted towards each other but are blinded by lust. They try to love each truthfully but can not help being “caught in the web of a lie,” of a love that is not there. They fight to try to feel any real emotion towards each other and ultimately making their love feel like war.

#2 top rated interpretation:Surprisingly, this is one of the few songs they have that isn't really about sex. This one is particularly about poisoned relationships. The guy and the girl want the relationship to work, but they just don't love each other that way, hence the line 'make a wish on our sorry little hearts'. The line 'have a smoke, pour a drink' means that the relationship is stressful, and they kinda want to just drink to forget about their issues. 'Steal a kiss in the dark' means that the relationship—or lack thereof—is private, or something they can't let other people see because it's sorta wrong. 'Fingernails on my skin like the teeth of a shark', this part IS about sex, and is pretty straight forward and literal. 'I'm intoxicated by the lie', basically, they're fuck-buddies, but they both either want it to mean something, or they think it meant something. They're basically blinded by their emotions. Now, 'In the chill of your stair I am painfully lost, like a deer in the lights of an oncoming bus', basically means that he's not sure how to act around her. 'Hearts on fire to night, feel my bones ignite, feels like war' they're both pissed, and they're fighting. To the guy, it's similar to war. 'We go together or we don't go down at all', basically means exactly what you think it means. They go together til the very end.

it sounds like a love/hate relationship, hence feeling like war.

"No escape in the truth, I am caught in the web of a lie" so it's like saying what that other person said like they know it's wrong but they want it to mean something but their love is a lie and doesn't have any meaning but they wish it did and they both know it won't work out.

Sex, sex, and more sex.
-
Love is pretty much like war. Two people who are in a very destructive relationship always fight. So the song is pretty self explanatory but sometimes it's deeper than it seems. cx

He's in love with her soooo badly and she's been lieing to him, double crossed him and is telling his secrets to his worst enemies, hence the song title, 'A Love Like War'
