I think 'Help Yourself' is about trying your best to help someone out of an addiction or a dire situation but somehow they aren't really taking in your advice and are still in the situation. The lyrics 'I can't help you, if you won't help yourself' means that it's the person's responsibility to climb out of the addiction or the bad situation instead of it being her responsibility. The person who she's trying to help sees her advice as pointless because they think they're smarter and wiser than her as they've got a degree and Amy hasn't according to the lyrics 'You've got the degree in philosophy, so you think you're cleverer than me'. It makes it seem that the person who needs help aren't taking her advice seriously or listening to her because of her intellectual past. So the message of the song is you can only help someone to a certain degree and the only way of getting out of a bad situation is by helping yourself. I love this song as it's quite perky but has a strong message that everyone needs to know.
