The song is about a guy whose life is a mess and he's looking back on his past. He fell for a girl but she left and it hurt. He's thinking about all the things he could have done with his life, some kinda fun (getting drunk at the dance and getting with the homecoming queen), others not so good (holding up a grocery store, getting hooked on drugs, going to jail "for 5 years and then 7 more"). This song is about a guy who almost does lots of things but ever does. His life is a series of almost events that could have, should have but did happen and he is reminiscing about the one who got away.
