Dave Matthews Band: American Baby Meaning
Song Released: 2005
American Baby Lyrics
Fell so hard to make us lose our faith,
From what’s left you’d figure it out,
Still make lemonade taste like a sunny day,
Stay, beautiful baby,
I hope you stay American, baby
American baby,
Nobody’s...

#1 top rated interpretation:This song is actually about America staying American. Not all of this politics crap but to stay American with things like baseball, cookouts, July 4th. Remember the things that make America American.

This song seems more relevant than ever.
-
I actually thought it was about his love for a girl that was the one that got away. Ha. Ooops
-
I'm sorry, but I am reading through so many of these interpretations, and a majority of you couldn't be more wrong.
The song touches on the sense of American pride and for that you are correct. It is somewhat political in a sense, but it is not to insight any sort of political frenzy.
Dave wrote the song with the intentions of explaining small things in the world may always change, and the world around us is constantly going, but the smaller people (the middle class) are struggling to just get by, but they are the ones who make the world what it is.
Throughout the music video, they show random Americans, from firefighters, police, a soccer mom, and soldiers. It is a really touching music video, and that begins to touch on what it truly means.
American Baby's commentary was not meant to be political, but more a pacifistic commentary, that we are what we are, because of what we do, even if our government struggles to find what's right, we as a people can stand up and fight for what we believe in. -
He wrote this for his nephew John.
-
None of these interpretations are even close, this song is about how Americans are viewed throughout the world. Although many have this pre-conceived notion that people hate America, really, if you have ever been to a 3rd world county, Americans are treated like rock-stars, rich and glamorous ("Stay... American Baby... Beautiful Baby...").
-
It is about Jesus Christ, hence the lyrics "I hope I don't get let behind"
-
He wrote this the day Bush was re-elected
-
I know this song has to do with Dave being uneasy about politics and the way this country is run.
