"Without love, where would you be now?"
Life keeps moving and doesnt stop- like a train wont stop easily with all its momentum and weight. They're going to go with or without you. (First verse) But finding, appreciating and maintaining love (romantic, family and/or friends) give lifes journey purpose and roots. Otherwise whats the point and there's nothing to keep you here, so you wander in search of (second verse)
First chorus(illinois and central...) seems to indicate that it takes effort to maintain relationships but we need to bectrue to ourselves and be somewhat self-sufficient rather than be dependent on others or use them as scapegoats when things dont go right in our life. Last chorus (pistons keep on turning...). Reiteration of the fact that life goes on, the world doesnt stop turning for us and that we need to accept the fact that we make our journey travelling on cold and hard steel rails (impersonal/unyielding,inflexible) BUT we need to find positive advantageous ways to go with flow, work with what we got, discern and utilize help others can consistently give (steel rails are cold and hard, but the mountains they go down). What would be insurmountable, daunting, or treacherous on our own could be possible if we are tolerant, willing and open once we admit we need help.
