Under the lamppost back on Sixth street
Hearing you whisper through the phone,
"Wait for me to come home."

It's all about interpretation. It's obviously a love song, but it can also be about a non-romantic relationship. You don't have to be romantic to love someone, you love your friends and your family in a platonic way. To me, this is very relatable to a friendship where you either start drifting away, or you have a huge fight. I guess my point is that this song can relate to a bunch of different relationships, not just romantic.

I feel like this song is basically about freezing a moment and keeping it forever, like a photograph. He says "We keep this love in a photograph. We made these memories for ourselves. Where our eyes are never closing, Hearts are never broken, And times are forever frozen still." So it's basically saying that no matter what happens, to keep that moment forever because in that specific moment in time, everything was good & happy. They hadn't gone through a heartbreak, they were happy, they were making memories, etc. The "photograph" represents a memory and he's saying to preserve it and keep it wherever you go.

I actually agree with this interpretation but when I hear this song, this is what comes to my mind:
It about a young couple where they have a fight("and if u hurt me, that's ok baby only words bleed)(loving can hurt sometimes) and the girl seems to be fed up with the guy and they don't break up but eventually stays away from each other and they are missing each other but don't know how how to fix it("so u keep me inside the pocket of ur ripped jeans...") and is they're only in each other's memories and photographs. So the guy is apologising and is expressing the fact that he needs her and loves her ("wait fo me to come home"). He hopes his love for her can mend their relationship again ("loving can mend our souls...")
This is only just one of the possible explanations for this song and this is based on my current relationship. All of these interpretations are right. No right or wrong. It just depends on what type of relationship you're facing.

This song is about keeping me with you. I may not be there but you still have me in a photograph. Even if you dont have one of me I will still be yours. If I am away at war I am still in your heart, forever and always. Just dont lose memories of me and you will always have me.

this song will always remind me of someone who's dead. my grandma or some good friend...
i never really thought of it as a lovesong. every sentence sounds like someone dead is talking to me. it sounds as if my grandma for example talks to me and tells me, that she will always be here in this photograph that i'm holding in my hands.
for me it's a really sad song. it's not a broken relationsship, it's much more! it's death, that tore this people apart.
i love it so much. for me it's like wings from birdy. both songs remind me of a dear person that i lost. they're so sad, but still so beautiful....

For whatever reason one of the two lovers clearly parts with the other. The one going away asks the one staying at home to hold on to a photograph of a time when they were lovers
. He/she tells their partner staying at home that loving me will hurt because i will be away but our love is also what will heal you. He/she also tells their partner staying at home that even if you hurt me out of frustration by doing something it will not hurt me physically instead it will be your words and the emotional damage that will bleed forever. Finally He/she also says that I remember our parting moment of how you kissed me and that is my last memory of you. I love you and want you to wait for me to come home. At least that's my interpretation.

It's a promise of keeping someone you love 'close' to you, in your mind, when you're apart. Keeping a photograph with you is a reminder that the memories and the person will always be with you anyway. I think it's a promise between both of them (both partners)

I agree with the long distance relationship one.

I think the song is about two lovers who Are probably passing through a particular phase in their relationship. But then there is a photograph that shows how perfect they once were. Maybe that could help remember what they once felt even though something has gone wrong now. Then "If you hurt me, that's okay baby only words bleed" means even if she hurts him he will understand maybe because he is not close by. Probably distance ish.

Agree with all of the above:) However i have a different interpretation. This song could also be about a couple who have broken up. And all that's left is a photograph of them. This is only based on my own interpretation based on my situation now as i listen to this song. He is hoping that there would be a possibility this relationship would work out again. He is wishing the girl would take him back again. Maybe he has done something wrong before that's why they broke up. He is gonna risk it all this time round just to do anything to get her back. Thus, "And if you hurt me,well that's okay baby.Only words bleed..." It seems like a pretty tragic love story between two people who really love each other but the guy especially can't seem to move on but keep wanting this again.

My friend was suicidal and I thought of her when I heard this...
"Times forever frozen still"
She's frozen in time after she's dead...
"How you said through the phone
Wait for me to come home" was her suicide note through the phone and comig home was the listener dying and seeing them in heaven but now I hear people's soldier version it sounds more realistic...
Oh well I'll always be reminded of my friend

I am in a long distance relationship and this sing fits us perfectly. Weather its about a soldier at war or just a couple who arnt with each other or anything in between, its just a song to comfort a loved one that will let them know that their partner is coming home and until then they will be with them in memories and photographs.
anonymous Jul 28th, 2014 7:53am report
This song is obviously about a person being away from his or her partner. And so he/she asks their significant other to hold on to their photograph which potrays a perfect scenario and wait for him or her to come home.
What's really beautiful about this song is the fact that Ed xhooses to show two sides of love. One which can hurt and the other which can heal. He pictures it as a paradox but even though it has a negative side it still is the one and only true thing which a person can have forever.
This song brings tears to my eyes. Its so beautifully written that its hard not to get moved by it.
