We headed west to find ourselves some truth, ooh
What you waiting for?

We counted all our reasons, excuses that we made
We found ourselves some treasure, and threw it...

I think that he's saying that it doesn't matter, whatever is happening, if he's there it will be blamed on him. "The suns beating down...Blame it on me." The both made excuses, knowing they were excuses, but he will take the blame.
