I think its about his memories and I agree that his religious side ties into it too. How so much has changed but he feels the need to hold on.

I think it's about J3T not wanting to let go of his religious side. "If you let go,will you promise that you'll stay in my shadow??" I think that means that the "Ghost" of J3T's religious side that if he "lets go" or fades away a bit that he'll still have it in his shadow so that it's always "be there"

I think when he says "if you let go, will you promise that you'll stay in my shadow" he's saying that if the person dies do they promise that they won't leave his side. That's what I think.
