Like his younger counterpart, Dylan, Cohen loved a well parsed list. In Thousand Kisses Deep, he walks us through the minefield of romance, the expression of passion and sexuality, the instincts employed around deceit and loss of innocence as well as the flirtatious humor he contributes to otherwise unappealing life lessons.
How can we ever ask for more than he gives us here, listing out the pitfalls and rewards of letting go and letting God, if you will. How can we ever be afraid again after hearing all these misty outcomes of simply accepting all that is involved in being human?
Like the mythical storyteller of Arthurian legend just reaching out from the ether and taking our hand as we walk where angels fear to tread, he says, don't worry, "I made it to, the forward deck, it's still here, I'll show you where to step, after all, it's just the unknown, no trouble, it's just heart, it's just sexuality, it's actually funny, you'll like it, I promise!
