Given what the song is about, I'm so sure that it says sadness is a blessing, sadness is a curse. It rhymes as well do the last two lines.

I am pretty sure she says sadness is a "perk" instead of "pearl" or "curse". But i would love to know what she really sings, cause the answers are diffrent on every website.

I think this song is about the happy memories that one has from his or her past that now have turned into sorrow as they are long past. Now remaining with the bitter sorrow of the present where he or she has noting left he or she is clinging tight to those memories believing that it's better to hurt and have loved rather never feel love.
