James Hetfield's favorite amp was stolen, after this happened he became very depressed. He wrote this song thinking he was going to give up on Metallica and life in general. After leaving this depressed stage, the bend was going through his journal and found that this would make a good song. And there you have it. Fade to Black.

This is a song about risking everything, and letting something end, and afterwards realising what you have lost, and how bad you want it back, but the only way you can get it back is by admitting you were wrong and saving yourself, from the inside out.
