You're both wrong. This song is actually about a young man who went to fight in a war despite his mother's wishes. He ends up dying in the war and his mother is angry and sad for what happened to him due to his blatant defiance and stupidity.

I think he`s trying to tell his mother that he doesn`t care anymore. And just telling her how it is.

That sounds just like what a mother would love to hear.
But i`m sure she`d love to hear
and right now they`re building a coffin your size.
He just wants to tell his mother how life really is. -
This song from my own interpretation is about Gerard not necessarily wishing he could have been a better son but saying he could of. I thinks it's almost like an apology or more like an oh well I turned out ok anyway. It's him talking to his mother trying to prove himself right.
