The song is about being afraid to fall in love. The author is falling for this girl, but has been hurt in the past, so instead of allowing it to happen, he builds up walls "Freezes the rivers" "welcomes back winter" but he "keeps her warm" can't give her up entirely. The bit about skating is him running away from her. In the end he realizes that she has deep issues some sort of depression or addiction, and says that he'd "rather skate on the thinnest ice" than remain in the relative safety of his "Powdery paradise" and allows himself to fall in love.
