I dont think this is about a relationship, mainly because artists sometimes sing to those who are listening. This sounds like its a metaphoric "letter" to the listeners.

Sung by a female vocalist I'm sure this song has more to do with relationship issues than what it means to me, but I have struggled with my closest friend being corrupted and changed by external forces, and the line "something got in the way, and your soul turned black as the sun grows somber" really spoke to me. I cried the first time I really listened to it with intent. I've lost my only true best friend, his soul turned black and now the sun is setting on our time as comrades.
