Steely Dan - Cousin Dupree Meaning

Song Released: 2000
Cousin Dupree Lyrics
-
In the 'TV Jazz-Rock Party 2000' special (available on YouTube), Donald Fagen relates Cousin Dupree as- "kind of a traditional, fun, country sort of tune... has a little story in there... something My father would have described as "a little risqué."
Anyone worth their salt knows these guys were phenomenal lyricists. And once again (19 years later) their tongue-n-cheek, ever-entertaining delivery of so many memorable song lyrics is humming along at full strength with 'Cousin Dupree'.
Within the song's great rhythm, beat, hooks, and back-up singers who never miss- there are the always and ever complex lyrics but so easy on the ears.
The wonderful repartee, the set-up and payoff of Dupree's roving-eye/slightly-naughty-intentional-line-crossing-verbal-come-on is entirely scorched by Cousin Janine's brilliantly scathing, takedown response.
To say her syncopated words (as Donald relays them) leave the guileless Dupree completely floored and wondering which way is up would be an understatement of epic proportion. I'll just say this: As always, this gem of a song is so sooooo good. -
I think this is a song about love and the deep family bonds formed between cousins.
