As Tears Go By Lyrics

It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Smiling faces I can see
But not for me
I sit and watch
As tears go by

My riches can't buy everything
I want to hear the children sing
All I hear is the sound

It's about getting old and watching the children play. Doing things I use to do they they think are new. I set and watch as tears go by.

I always thought the song was about missing a lost love and the mention of children was somehow bringing up those memories and only incidental to the larger meaning of the song

it's sad. But at the same time is a happy song.
