The Script: If you Ever Come Back Meaning
Song Released: 2011
If you Ever Come Back Lyrics
But you can't step on the train
Everything's the way that you left it
I still haven't slept yet
And if you're covering your face now
But you just can't hide the pain
Still setting two plates on the counter...

#1 top rated interpretation:This song is literally about break-ups or one party leaving another after certain major hiccups in relationships, however, the abandoned party does not give up hope. And he/she will always be waiting until the other party returns.
Let's assume the girl left the guy after some problems.
"If you're standing with your suitcase
But you can't step on the train
Everything's the way that you left it
I still haven't slept yet" The opening sentence tells us clearly that the guy is waiting for her and is always prepared to welcome her back, in case she couldn't bear to leave.
As the chorus goes "I'll leave the door on the latch. ...... They'll be a light in the hall and the key under the mat. ..... They'll be a smile on my face and the kettle on. ..........", this verse is telling us that nothing had changed since she had left. No matter how painful it is, he still wants her to come back, because it is more painful to have her gone.
Although this sentence "Now they say I'm wasting my time", tells us that people around him maybe trying to pursuade him to let go of waiting her, however, he reacts by saying "But they used to say the world was flat. But how wrong was that now?" Using our spherical world as an analogy of her return, with their 'flat' world as the impossibilities of her return. This is what he believes in, how hopeful he felt.
We sometimes wonder why would he be so willing to wait for her over indefinite periods. However, right at the 4th and 5th verse, it explains the reason; He misses her so much, and that he is still unable to let her go, despite their fights, their arguments and cold wars against each other in the past. He used to have someone who will face these against him, and yet right now, he is facing all these against loneliness.
As the last verse were being played, the words from his heart says that he will always forgive her as long as she returns to his side just because he loves her too much to give her away.
To sum it up, it's about the wait over someone whom left him/her, due to his/her unrequited love towards the other party, the patience of the wait will be permanent until the day the other party returns. This song is therapeutic for people who shares the same problem, on the same time, encourages them not to give up if they had chosen to wait since the start.
These are my interpretation about this song anyway, I'm not sure if I got it right or wrong. -
It is about a child running away from home after a troubled period of time with this/her parent/parents, and this song expresses that no matter what the child has done wrong, the parent will always love them and just wants them to come home. It could be relevant to any situation when someone has left home, though.

This song is about a mother and daughter who has run away. The line "I wish you would still give me the cold shoulder and I wish you would still give me a hard time" means that she doesn't care how much attitude her daughter gives she just loves her. And "there'll be a smile on my face and the kettle on, and it will be just like you were never gone" means that no matter what the daughter has done in the past the mother will always love her no matter what.

I think it's about drugs . Like , withdrawals and group therapy to get over it all . I don't want to pick out certain lyrics because the lyrics ccould be interpreted into anything . But if you watch the video with that mindset , you can see what I mean . When there's the syringe taking blood out , it's like trying to get the drugs out of yourself . And when the lead singer kicks the chair towards the screen at the end , as in a way to say that go get the therapy .
I think like that .
