This song is at least semi-autobiographical. Joel grew up as part of gangs, got in fights, etc, and is reminiscing to an extent, despite the fact that he says he is "not lost in let's remember." But at the same time he looks at the past realistically. He "lost a lot of fights but it taught me how to lose OK." And he says music set him on fire and that he "found out you could dance and still look tough anyway" -- that's his discovery of music and finding his niche in life. He paints a colorful, vidid picture of growing up during the 50s and 60s, "keeping the faith" by conforming with his peer group. Then once he's discovered music and learned what being a man and being tough is, he's still keeping the faith as he's being true to himself and his potential. Notable, finally, is the realistic yet hopeful message that you shouldn't get lost in the past, that the good times weren't always good, and tomorrow's not as bad as it seems.
