The guy has filled his walls(his heart) with layers of paint(memories). He wants to get over the girl, but he first has to clean himself of all the paint. (get rid of all the memories). He finds that certain things "aid the pace of my cleaning".He wants to be done with the hurt and to move on, and as soon as he is done hurting he is moving on.("and as soon as I'm done I am gone.") he wants so badly to be in a better relationship and to feel comfortable again.("the new coats of paint will not reacquaint broken hearts to broken homes.)
