This song is about the gratitude Jeff Lynne had for his good friend, Stephen Joseph Woollam, whose name was incorrectly spelled as Woolam on the band's first album. The Time album is a concept album, and it parallels Eldorado, the album Woollam secretly contributed to, in many ways. One example is Prologue and Epilogue, as compared to Eldorado Overture and Eldorado Finale. Another example, specifically in this song, are the lyrics "with your head held high", and this is direct reference to the lyrics "and my head is high" in Poor Boy (The Greenwood) on Eldorado.
