    It has been reported this song's inspiration was John Lennon's death. Though that could be part of the inspiration, talented artists like Jeff Lynne are capable of multiple messages in songs. The actual inspiration was Stephen Joseph Woollam, whose name was incorrectly spelled as Woolam on the band's first album. He secretly contributed to later albums, then suspiciously died. There is an old Jeff Lynne interview, and he speaks of writing lyrics where there were fields. This was him and Woollam working on music together, and Woollam experienced a lot of sadness in his life. That's why the song speaks of fields of sorrow.
