Sugar, We're Goin Down Lyrics

Am I more than you bargained for yet
I've been dying to tell you anything you want to hear
Cause that's just who I am this week
Lie in the grass, next to the mausoleum
I'm just a notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song
(A...

I saw something on another lyrics site how on a stop at Warped Tour '06 Pete Wentz introduced this with a quote along the lines of "This song is for every girl out there who's ever fallen in love with a guy really hard even though you knew you could never be together. How sometimes it's easier, instead of trying something and failing or doing something you'll regret, to just realize he's beautiful just the way he is - even if it means you'll never be the friction in his jeans," and then Patrick said "friction in his jeans" during the second verse. It was in some city with a really high GLBT population (San Fransisco I think); Fall Out Boy has been known to change explanations based on what the audience will relate to. In this case, though,Wentz was speaking specifically about a girl falling in love with a gay man.

    Hey xXMartiniKissXx
Pete's a pretty sarcastic guy, he only said that to prove that only true fans know what it's about.

Pete also said around the time that this song came out, that he hates saying things that people want to hear.
"Am I more than you bargained for yet?"
This refers to how people thought their next album would be, and how people want them to be the same. So when he's referring to things people want to hear, it's within his music.

I think this song's about someone who has a lot of trouble for one reason or another getting a girlfriend they actually like, so they just "go through the motions" to feel like they're worth something to someone. The narrator seems to have an inferiority complex.

I think this song could be about a girl falling in love with her gay friend and doing a sort of "sour grapes" thing to cope with it, pointing out that even if they did experiment, it'd be just that and nothing more could happen. Since the site crashes every time I try to post my lengthly explanation I'm just going to point you to Songfacts and close by saying I've lived through this. :)

This is one of those songs where you can't really get meaning from it until you've lived through something that you can relate to it.

I think the line "But you're just a line in a song" is sort of sarcastic. If you think about it, you have to really care about someone to write a song about them. So he's basically saying sarcastically, "Oh it's okay. You just meant the world to me and you broke my heart," using the sarcasm to sort of cover his feelings.

God can create life. A loaded God complex involves the possible creation of life and is a penis.

I have a live recording of them playing the sing in Chicago right before The Academy Is.
The guitarist says, and i quote "i hear a lot of kids going around and singing this song and they don't know what it means. I think i should tell you right now: this song is about sex. (cheers from crowd) This song about the best sex you will ever have. (more cheers) This song is about the best sex you will ever have with yourself (cheering and laughing) That's right, give it up for your mother******* right hand!"

If the phrase is "a loaded God complex, cock it and pull it" does that mean you're cocking and pulling a loaded God? That just doesn't make sense. I googled "loaded GUN complex" for a psychological definition. It means a brash, loose cannon type of personality which fits in with the rest of the lyrics: number one with a BULLET, COCK it and PULL IT...I think it's just the way the lead singer is saying the word "gun". All the times I heard the song before seeing the lyrics I thought they were saying "Sugar, woo going down swinging". Only after seeing the lyrics did I realize he says "we're" instead of "woo" which makes better sense. Just my interpretation.

All of these interpretations are so shallow, and only look at the words, not what the words might be implying.

A loaded god complex means a loaded gun. God complex is thinking you can control who lives and dies. In this case the god complex is the instrument of execution. And it's loaded meaning a loaded gun. Not really much else to that part in my opinion.

Haha going with what Anonymous on November 11th, 2005 said, It's started to get me thinking about another song I know that has almost the exact same interpretation (in my mind, of course.) the song "Mr. Brightside" by the Killers is also kind of about a man silently dying inside because of a sexual relationship with a girl that he had. It's turned out to be more to him, and while he's silently observing her other relationships, it hurts him deeply. Seems almost like a common thing, eh? haha. (: and your right, whoever made that interpretation, the more I learn about fall out boy AND the Killers, The more I love and respect their bands.

what everybody means by the "gods complex being a gun," is that a gun has the ability to take away a life, therefore it has a god like quality. aka god's complex

When he says: "Oh don't mind me I'm watching you two from the closet Wishing to be the friction in your jeans Isn't it messed up how I'm just dying to be him..." He bascially means that he knows the girl is doing it with other guys. But he wishes that he could take the place of the guy and be "the friction" in her jeans. make sense?

This song is obviously a love song, there is not getting around that. One aspect of the song that I feel has been neglected is the line, "Cause that's just who I am this week."

I can see two ways to interpret this line which affect the interpretation of the whole song. First, the guy in the song has decided to be nice to the girl for this week to see if she'll notice him and want to be with him. This is supported by the line, "I'm just a notch in your bedpost" - meaning, I'm (currently)just a part of your surroundings. (On a side note, bedposts generally see you when you're intimate with someone else and not given a second thought... This does not mean that the guy is stalking the girl, it just means that he knows what's going on in her personal life.)
Second, the first line of the song, "Am I more than you bargained for yet?" leads me to believe that the guy has just fallen in love with her, she is his newest fancy - but the guy knows that come next week he may be in love with a different girl. This is proven by the line "I'll be your number one with a bullet" - he has no time to waste because he may not like her tomorrow; in order to be her "number one" he must kill her current boyfriend or make her realize how important he is to her. In the background vocals to the end of the song, the line, "Take aim at myself" is sung - followed by the line "A loaded God complex, cock it and pull it" - meaning, the guy might use his narcissism to injure himself and have the girl run to him, leaving the guy she's with in the process.
