I think it's about his father. As all know the relationship wasnt that good, and Matthew is "stuck with him", with his "apathy", just like he is "grounded" and "boxed in" as a child.
Basically his saying his father is an ignorant that wanted that Matthew become one too. So Matthew will not miss him as time passes, but he is still his father forever.
