   Gerard wrote the song. He was really liked it, and he began to write it with Red. He believed in one of the verses, and it was always in his head. G sat down with a guitar and tried to write the whole thing immediately. The lyrics just came to him. He actually started this song with an acoustic guitar. He likes the version with the acoustic. For three days straight they worked on it. The band was watching TV and "Gerard points in the air, goes in the other room with a guitar and comes out with the chorus." The band really likes this song, and to them it's just a tribute to themselves.

   In reference to the 9th post...
   
   I totally agree, except for "drop the dagger and lather the blood on your hands"
   
   obviously, those two lines reference "Romeo & Juliet"
   But also it may reference MacBeth. In the play, MacBeth saw blood lathered on his hands after killing the King.
   
   I think "drop the dagger and lather the blood on your hands" is a metaphor for himself knowing that he did something wrong and he keeps reminding himself of it.

   When you're out on your own--- This is about feeling alone... everything seems to be cloudy...
   
   If I crash on the couch
   Can I sleep in my clothes?--- It's how it feels to be sad and don't want to do anything more than sleep...

   I'm drunk, I suppose--- I thought that maybe he was in a party or maybe with a friend hanging out.. (Bert?? about the first interpretation.. This friend could be Bert)
   
   If it looks like I'm laughing
   I'm really just asking to leave--- He seems like he's happy and having fun but he's just tryng to hide the truth.. He just wanted to go from the party... He doesn't feel good
   
   This alone, you're in time for the show--- Some girl or good friend who just came in the right moment to make him feel better

   I'm the one that you loathe --- But she/he (I think it's she..) hates him because he's a drunk or drug and she doesn't like that kind of things, so.. It's the one who can help him... and the one who's taking him down
   
   You can watch me corrode like a beast in repose--- It's feeling bad about the fact that she hates him, he can't do anything but "corrode" his own life.

   Away with the boys in the band--- And... with corrode it can be being out with his friends, and taking poison (drugs...booze..)

He's on a bender because in one side he loves her.. and wants to be with her, but she hates him and he can't do anything for it (but he actually can.. It's just the attitude some people take with prolems...)so he want's to be sober, but he can't and because of it he doesn't want anything with him...and the only thing he's asking for it's a kiss "before she goes" (she it's his life...)
   
   Give me a shot to remember-- He want's her to help him to remember how to be right...sober...clean...happy it's like if he wanted her to hit him to make him understand he's in the worng way.
   
   And you can take all the pain away from me -- If she helps him, he will be happy again and without pain...
   
   A kiss and I will surrender--- If she shows him a little of love, he can surrender and be free of the shit again
   
   The sharpest lives are the deadliest to lead -- C'mon this line it's clear... His life it's a hell it even take a lot of him energy to be living...
   
   
   A light to burn all the empires--- Of the people who wants to shange him.. and who make him get to the place he is now (Drunk and Drug)

   In love with all of these vampires--- Vampires are the people who thinks you're bad.. use the same methafore that in vampires will never hurt you, the sun it's ashamed to rise for the vampires... The ones who thinks they're right...but they're not
   
   So you can leave like the sane abandoned me--- So if she want she can stay with the vampires and leave him.. whatever... like the sane abandoned him... He lost everything... even his mind
   
   There's a place in the dark where the animals go
   You can take off your skin in the cannibal glow--- A place where he can be free he can do anything...we're back to the party or maybe a bar orsomething where he can take all the drugs and alcohol he wants
   
   Juliet loves the beat and the lust it commands---it's like... "yeahh I love it.. I love to be drunk!!" (it's lying... To feel strong)
   Drop the dagger and lather the blood on your hands, Romeo---It's like "c'mon.. kill me now... I don't want this life anymore!! you're killing em anyway.. So... drop the dagger and lather the blood on your handds.. That's what you want!"

   The sharpest lives is about gerards past drug use! duh! Everyone knows dat! Anyways..it's mine and my boyfriends song. We really love this song but still...it is bout gerards past engaged drug use nd how he's coming clean.:)GO GERARD GO!!!

   I'd just like to say that murdocking's interpretation was absolutely AMAZING, I mean, that could be used as an example of a great piece of literature....i completely agree with everything he said, I mean, he really broke down every line of that song...

   Murdocking has a very interesting interpretation. I agree with some of the concept of it.
   With all that Gerard and the guys have stated about the making of this album, or DURING the making of it, I find this and several other songs on this album to be very revealing.
   The thought that this album is all about "the patient" is very romantic, isn't it? And it's obviously working for them. But the truth is, most of these songs are much more personal and closer to them than you may can imagine.
   Several major incidents happened during the time of preparing and making this piece of work (their best so far). Do you honestly believe they couldn't bring those things with them into these songs?
   These incidents could be seen as terminal conditions, or definitely, inevitable conclusions to certain things in their lives. There is a strong tone of reluctant acceptance throught this album.
   Think about what they have talked about in some of the interviews they've given and then you'll start seeing these songs totally opposite of what you were originally told to see them as.

   My idea of this song is that this song is a song of Desperation.
   
   It's like the search for something that would finally make you happy. Whether it be something or someone.
   
   In the line "A light to burn all the empires" for me, it's like in a situation of YOU getting everything what you want, most probably a grand life.
   
   The question is... Are you going to be happy forever in that kind of situation?
   
   Imagine, only one thing can make you happy. Why would you strain yourself in finding the happiness? HAPPINESS can be attained if you would live your life to the fullest, if you think you've done what you must do or what you must have done with (spouse).

    Gerard said that he wrote the song about him and Bert. About when they used to get drunk and we're so close. The lyrics "One kiss and I will surrender" supposedly refers to how difficult it was for Gerard to chose being sober and clean over Bert.
