Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince Lyrics

You know I adore you, I'm crazier for you
Than I was at 16, lost in a film scene
Waving homecoming queens, marching band playing
I'm lost in the lights
American glory faded before me
Now I'm feeling hopeless, ripped up my prom dress
Running...

"This song is about disillusionment with our crazy world of politics and inequality, set in a metaphorical high school" - Taylor Swift.

While the overarching theme is the polarizing political battleground that is the United States, she also sings about finding "one person whom you can confide in through all the noise."
The song starts with her describing her own loss of naivety as she became an adult and realized the political climate in the US was much more complicated than she always assumed it to be ("American glory faded before me, now I'm feeling hopeless, ripped up my prom dress, running through rose thorns, I saw the score board, and ran for my life").

The second verse is more complex. She described this part of the song as "political undertones becoming overtones." Her understanding of politics is much better now, and the element of darkness to it all makes her feel "helpless."

There are a lot of clever lyrics in this song, which are like puzzle pieces the listener must put together.
"I'm crazier for you than I was at 16, lost in a film scene" is one of them. As a teenager, Taylor wrote a song called 'Crazier' for the Hannah Montana movie that came out. Pretty slick word choice!
Most of the political references are so subtle that a lot of people fail to catch them.

I believe she was looking back at a past love she took for granted, and now that love is gone so she is remembering how it was in highschool being with that person.
