What he's trying to say is that he has strayed the path of God's will, and after a long time has realized that he was wrong in the place he was living in. He the singer says, "Every broken man comes to understand that he'll never find paradise, all he wants was there all the time.", which means God had a plan all along they just do not want to accept God's fate for them. So the singer just realized he is has diverged from the path God established and is now willing to follow God.
