Avril Lavigne: I'm With You Meaning
Song Released: 2002
I'm With You Lyrics
I'm waiting in the dark
I thought that you'd be here by now
There's nothing but the rain
No footsteps on the ground
I'm listening but there's no sound
Isn't anyone tryin to find me?
Won't somebody come...

#1 top rated interpretation:I feel like this song is about a runaway girl or boy about to commit suicide. They feel like as they're standing on the bridge that no one's going to stop them, and that no one's looking for them. Right before they jump they feel a tugging on their arm. As they turn around no one's there. But then they hear a voice telling them not to do it. The voice is their friend or family or signifgant other I don't know and it's in their head. So they don't jump, but they also can't find their way home, which is the part of "Won't somebody come take me home" and "I thought that you'd be here by nnow." They keep walking and the part that's "Is anybody here I know?" in that point of the music video Avril is walking through a party so I personally believe it to mean that they are going into parties or shops and resturants looking for a face they recongize.

#2 top rated interpretation:Oh my God,This is avril's favorite song. It's so sad. In this song she's describing her bad mood, she's depressed and needs someone to help her and make her feel better and it's not important who he really is. She's emotionally tired and wants to get out of her place. Maybe someone has broken her heart and she is hopeless and wants to have new relationships or places to make her feel better.

#3 top rated interpretation:Guys this isn't a love song.
This song is about young Avril realizin' what's the life, what does matter, and “You” is herself, not some guy
She's around a lot of people but the only one she trust is her.
It's about met yourself -
This is the definition of loneliness. She wants to feel like she belongs. "Won't somebody come take me home" is metaphorically speaking she wants to return somewhere where she gets love and support.
-
I read a lot of ridiculous reviews here, the song is just about LONELINESS. It is just about a girls talking about her feelings.
-
The song is about a troubled girl who usually runs away from home and sometimes has no where to go at night so she's out at night in the cold, and sometimes she meets kind strangers who take her in and feed her for a night,so that's why the song is called I'm with you meaning the kind stranger.I wrote this in 1998 in a young offender center and gave it away with a handful of other songs because I new I would lose them cause I was a runaway and leave my stuff behind in places I run from, I wouldn't have gotten them anywhere the way they did.alot of the other songs made it too but were fictional, this is the one song that had personal meaning.

I realy think she is singing to song to herself. „I don’t know who you are but I am with you“ wouldnt be the longing for someone else, but the will for trusting and loving yourself, even if you don’t know yourself yet. Maybe this is a song about self-empowerment. The fact that there is no other protagonist in the video could undermine this theory.
-
I have a feeling she’s singing to a higher power like God, “I don’t know how to are but I’m with you” cuz everyone have heard of God “in god we trust” god is good” but not everybody knows him. You can’t just trust anybody some people suck for real.

Tbh, I don’t think it’s any particular scenario at all. Rather, it’s about practically anyone really who’s just so tired of going through so much ‘crap’, and being ‘alone’ in this case, for a long time. And honestly, I imagine when Avril sings the chorus: “I’m with You”. I don’t just imagine it as that particular imagery of her ‘holding someone’s hand’- as I find that to be more metaphorical really in the sense that the ‘seeker’ is just trying to find a ‘better place’. I just imagine that when she sings “I’m with You”, she’s actually also trying to indirectly say that she’s with the ‘person’ she ‘seeks for’. It’s basically the concept of ‘soul-mates’ really, of how every human-being is supposed to be made in ‘pairs’, and that you just have to wait and strive through life’s everyday struggles until you meet them. Honestly, this song overall seems so powerful... And very beautiful too.<3

I've been waiting. I still am. Waiting for what I don't know. Love? A glimpse of light in this dark abyss. I've seen the darkness of this world, the cruelty and the hatred. It disgusts me. I want to escape, but... there's nowhere to go. I see a bridge and I think I've found my answer. I don't want to be alone anymore. But, deep down I don't want to die. I want to feel the comfort of someone's arms. I don't know who's. No-one cares enough to know where I am. My thoughts overwhelm me, cascading into my head. I'm alone. I'm alone. And I just want to jump so they'll stop. Its cold tonight, but it's always cold when you're alone. I don't jump. Just stay standing there on that bridge. Alone. Alone. Anyone out there?

I think this song is about a kidnapped girl, and she's waiting on her parents or friends to come and ransom her but no one comes and now she has no choice but to stay with the person who took her explaining the "I don't know who you are but i'm with you" so no it's not a love song.
-
The most important line in this song is "I don't know who you are, but I'm with you." It is repeated over and over, and is the climax of the song. This line is the key - any interpretation has to reconcile with it.
-
This song sounds like a girl who has seen so much bad in the world that she is just giving up on anyone she could trust, including herself. But she still has hope to trust herself again. Realizing that she can't trust herself, she's about to jump off a bridge but when she's about to jump, a little voice inside her head saids "I'm with you." In other words, she convinces herself that she is the only one she can trust. In the end, she believes in herself.
-
I think it's about a girl who was about to commit suicide, but actually just wants someone to stop her and show her they care (isn't anyone trying to find me? Won't somebody come take me home?). When she is about to jump off the bridge, a stranger sees her and takes "her by the hand" and even though she doesn't know them, she doesn't care because for now, rather than being alone like she was before, she has this person.
OR
She feels like she is completely alone in the world, and she only wants someone to be with her, and when this stranger appears she let's them take her by the hand somewhere new, and doesn't care if she doesn't know them because at least she's with someone. -
I think she is going through bad things and she's not trusting anyone but herself but she doesn't understand herself. She is mostly talking to herself and not to some guy like what most people probably think. I know most of you think she's talking to a boy because of her other songs but try to think of it as her talking to herself, not understanding anyone including herself.

Okay I'm only 14 but I think this song is about a girl or a boy waiting for someone who has passed away, and they keep waiting and waiting at a place they always seen them, and it's such a miserable place now without them, the rain is poring down, it's like everything is a dream. They want that specific person to find them, take them somewhere new or back home, and they wont leave until it happens. But it won't ever happen until they leave the world with them by there side. Everything goes so wrong after they leave and you just think that everything's a complete mess, and that life isn't worth it anymore. You just want them back so much...but you know they won't. But in a dream they tell you that they will be there always, just not in a way you will notice them.
