A Pearl Lyrics

You're growing tired of me
You love me so hard and I still can't sleep
You're growing tired of me
And all the things I don't talk about

Sorry I don't want your touch
It's not that I don't want you
Sorry I can't take your touch

It's...

After being assaulted it’s hard to get touched even when you want to be and you love them. That’s probably not what it’s about but it would work for this interpretation too. The talk about falling in love with a war can be that your life is such a mess of trauma and shit and that’s what you're accustomed too.

I think this song is definitely about a toxic relationship that traumatized her. because when she says "i fell in love with a war" she expresses the fact of loving a toxic boy for her, who does not treat her well. The pearl metaphor is actually an allegory of trauma "he left a pearl in my head, and roll it around every night" this phrase means that the person with whom she allegedly had a toxic relationship left her with psychological trauma and since then she thinks about it every night. but she also expresses emotional dependence because when she says "there's a hole that you fill", which in reality means that despite the harm he does to her, she still needs him.

From experience,I think that the song means that someone fell in love with someone she had a toxic relationship."It's just that I fell in love with a war and nobody told me it ended"-i'd like to think that the song means she was trough hard times in the relationship "There's a hole that you fill" probably means she still misses him/her anyways. "It left a pearl in my head every night and i roll it around everynight" probably means she still thinks about the memories with him.

Everyone is saying that it's about a toxic relationship but in my eyes I picture it as having some trauma or self destructive behaviour that has basically become part of their identity. "I fell in love with a war and nobody told me it ended" I think this lyric means that they are able to let go of the trauma but they cling on anyways because they are afraid of losing themself along with it. This could also work with some sort of addiction?

I interpreted that this song is about the troubles that come with a healthy relationship after a toxic one. “You love me so hard and I still can’t sleep”. In the new relationship she recognises that she is receiving the love that she deserves but she is traumatised from her previous toxic relationship. “It left a pearl in my head” it has left her with trust issues and trauma that she cannot escape from. “I roll it around every night just to watch it glow, every night baby that’s where I go” she may become distant with her current partner because of this trauma of relationships that she has been left with.

I believe that this song chronicles the before and after of a toxic relationship. When she says "you're growing tired of me," she's alluding to when the relationship became unhappy, and possibly abusive. The line (the most important one, in my opinion) that goes "it's just that I fell in love with a war, and nobody told me it ended" is a metaphor for how, despite the fact that she left the relationship, she's still traumatized by whatever abuse occurred. This is my favorite Mitski song, because it just resonates with me so much.

Personally I always interpreted this song to be about addiction, the first verses being about pushing everyone away and struggling with depression, "I fell in love with a war" the war being the fight between her and the addiction, "left a pearl in my head and I roll it around every night" meaning she is trying to recover but every night she is filled with thoughts of relapsing. "There's a hole that you fill" being her loved ones she pushed away due to her being overwhelmed by her addiction and depression.

she is speaking of falling for toxic relationship and not being able to comprehend normal healthy relationship because she has manipulated herself into thinking that the toxicity was romantic and normal. 'a pearl in her head' means a memory of the toxicity and how she longs for it because 'she fell in love with a war'.
