"working for the knife" is definitely not about murder. it's essentially a critique of capitalism: the narrator is talking about how her childhood dreams, all her hopes and individuality got sucked away by this system that expects us to be solely a cog in this giant machine, to give up your life to work for something you can't even see or benefit off of. about how this 9 to 5 job is stripping off her identity because in the end, your work all you are and will ever be in the eyes of capitalism.

This song is about murder. Working the knife refers to stabbing and cutting a person. It is told by the point of view of the killer who is working the knife and killing over and over again.
