#1 top rated interpretation:This song was written by Harry. He has said in interviews that his lyrics are from personal feelings and experiences. Once of the first 1D songs he authored without the other 1D boys, Something Great is clearly written as a plaintive cry to someone Harry has deep feelings for, someone he loves. He is saying to this someone (his love) to "come into my world and say it all" and "Come on, jump out at me, come on, bring everything".
These sentences indicate Harry is in a different world than this love, whom he is begging to join him. Strange choice of words for a girl, isn't it? How is "his world" different from that of a potential girlfriend? Men and women don't exist in different "worlds". If they want to be together, they get together. Even if one is famous and one is not. Even if both are famous. Men and women get together all the time, regardless of their circumstances.
Notice the next line: "COME on, jump OUT at me"-- again, a strange choice of words if his love interest is a girl. However, not strange if your love interest is a guy, and you want him to COME OUT, where you are, so you can be together. Hence the next line: "Is it too much to ask for
something great?"
The reference to the script being already written is the situation Larry is in where they can't be the way they want to, that is, out and together. Harry hints at how he would give it all up: "rip it all up and start again" so they can be together. He realizes all he can do right now to be together is to "..come into your world and get it right, I'll say we're better off together here tonight".
Finally we come to the last verse. Strangely, this verse is completely different than the rest of the song:

It's a clear call out to his love, very emotional in its plaintive longing.
Now, remember, Harry wrote the lyrics to this song. That gives him the power to decide who sings what. This is why all the boys started writing more. It gives more say in how much they sing in each song.
Think about how powerful that is. To write a song about your secret relationship with the love of your life, who can't or won't join you so you can start building a life together because of outside circumstances. To have your love sing that last verse directly to you, after you've sung what you've wanted for so long.
So I believe it is no random coincidence that, after Harry and Zayn sing the last regular chorus, this final verse is sung by Louis in a very wrenching way. He needed that reassurance from Louis, and he got it by writing those words into the last verse of Something Great. By having Louis sing those words. To Harry. Over and over. At every concert they did.
Hang in there guys. You've come this far. Don't give up. We'll be there with you when you make it through to something great. -

#2 top rated interpretation:i literally don’t want to be that Larry person, but i do feel like it’s about that. don’t get me wrong, here, i am a Larry shipper and stuff but i think not everything is about Larry. but this might be.
we all know Haylor, right? please don’t tell me people actually think that’s.. real. it didn’t seem like it. do you not see coincidences like Haylor having quality photos — may i add paparazzi is not always called right away, and there’s specific numbers you have to call — and whenever Larry happens in public there’s very little quality, like that one video.
so, yeah, Taylor and Harry were set up to date. “we were meant to be, but a twist of fate made it so you had to walk away.” could be about both of their relationships. Louis had a girlfriend first, so whenever they were even near each other, they had to separate. which, makes no sense, because hey, guys do bro things. they joke, they do “no homo” things. but nooo, specifically Harry and Louis couldn’t even touch. if the rumors of them being together were false, they could’ve ignored it and just continue their funny things, but they didn’t. and they couldn’t even look at each other.
but Harry, being very optimistic and naive, thinks they’re still the perfect couple anyone could ever be. he loves Louis, Louis loves him, what’s the problem?
“come on, bring everything. is it too much to ask for something great?” this line refers to their relationship being closeted, and Harry (or Louis, who knows) defending themselves, egging them on to keep trying to get them to break their relationship. nothing will break it. and being in a relationship is amazing, and what’s also amazing is making it public so the world knows who your partner is. they want to do normal couple things, like go on dates and kiss and hug in public. is that too much to ask for? happiness? -

#3 top rated interpretation:I think Something Great is about someone who is craving for true love, he wants to love someone and be loved by someone. He just hasnt found that person yet, i think that is what the line; "come on jump out at me, come on bring everything" is about. And then the line; "is it too much to ask for something great" is a question like 'why is it taking so long for me to find the right person? Is it too much to ask?' And the first line; "one day youll come into my world" the person is imagining about what will happen when he found that special person. And the "i want you here with me" etc part is the pain he feels because he feels alone and want that person. So yeah, thats what i think :) great song and the lyrics unforunatly fit me xx

I think this song is about loving someone who you can't have.
It's about that kind of situation, where you really love someone and you want to be with them, but they don't love you back (as much as you love them) or for some other reasons you can't be together or love each other.
"I want you here with me, like how i pictured it, so i don't have to keep imagining" - you want them like how you have thought and wanted for so long... you don't wanna keep imagining anymore, you want it to finally happen!
"Is it too much to ask for something great?" - you wonder: is it too much for them to finally love me back? is it too much for them to even be with me?
and finally "you're all i want, so much it's hurting" - you want them so much that it really hurts.
but it's all your imagination. you can't have them. -
i dont know how to feel about this song. to me i feel like this song is about a relationship or a love that harry has with someone, that he wants to be open about but cant because he isn’t allowed. “the contract was written and i couldn’t change a thing” the relationship he is talking about is controlled and he cant stand it.
i dont know who exactly it is about but it is a gender-neutral song, so i guess its open to interpretation.
but it is such a beautiful and open song, and is definitely underrated❤️. -

Beautiful, sad and wonderful! Written by Harry Edward Styles. One of my favourite songs on the album. It was my favourite long before I knew Harry had written it. It's a song based on love, surely. I think Harry is the only one that can explain what the song and meaning behind the lyrics really is about, but I don't think he ever will tell anyone, not even the person he wrote this song about. I wouldn't do that neither do I think Harry would say "this song is about you". It's private and most likely he would keep this for himself, maybe that person finds out it is about them, but he will just leave it with that. I think he would let it be an interpretation for people.
It's a special song. He writes from experiences, it's sounds like it from the lyrics to some of the songs he has written, and he never joke when it comes to these things.
I do think he is lucky to have such an spectacular gift, to write and sing.
He has a beautiful voice and I know he has such passion for music. I can see it and I can feel it with in how he sings and writes. A man with a BIG heart and he is filled with kindness and love. -

I kinda think it may be about Haylor because it says 'The script was written and i could not change a thing. i want to rip it all to shreds and start again.' because their relationship was organized by management.
Also maybe about and for Directioners because as many people have said theres fan fictions we make and read, imagines we make an read and other stuff. these lyrics describe exactly that: 'I want you here with me like how I pictured it. So I don't have to keep imagining. -
I want to start off by saying that this is probably my favorite song on Midnight Memories. I love it because I think everyone can relate to it. It's about someone who's longing for someone to come along and love them. "Come on jump out at me" means that the person is ready to be loved. The person is probably been waiting for a very long time or has either had some bad breaks with romance and is wondering why, hence the verse "Is it to much to ask for something great?". Another way that the song could be interpreted is for the fans. I believe it sort of represents the fantasies that fans have about being with their favorite member "I want you here with me, like how I pictured it. So, I don't have to keep imagining." Fans keep these fantasies alive through fanfictions and dreams and they have certain images of how it would be and how great it would be to actually be loved by a celebrity that most likely doesn't know you exist. It's kind of like the fans are waiting around for their fantasies to become a reality.

From my point of view, this song is dedicated to us, directioners. It's all about how we write imagines and fan fictions. We imagine a nother world and we just want to share something great with them. This may sounds a bit far fetched though! But this is how i interpret the song :)

Personally I don't think it's a coincidence that if you replaced "c'mon bring everything" and replace it with "c'mon bring him to me" thesers so many other deeper things I could go into but another thing I noticed is how Louis gets his own solo at the end Harry is singing a lot of the song, hence maybe that's louis replying. Ok yes I am a Larry shipper but just listen, this is a very larryish song. "One day I'll come into your world and get it right" maybe louis is confused but Harry is sure he loves louis. Maybe elounor is partially real. Please take in mind that Harry and Louis at least once shared a bed. "Were better off together in our bed" also "the script was written and I could not change a thing" and lastly "is it too much to ask for something great?" That last one directed to Modest! The lyrics are wrong, that's not Something great. Ok anyways about the song something great, its about a girl who he likes, he wants her in his life, he doesn't want to pretend, he just wants her now, they had something great before after the break-up, in the beginning of the lyrics it goes "One day you come into my world." It means he wants her in his life ok?Then later on in the lyrics "One I'll come to your world and get it right." He means that he won't do anything wrong, like he wants to be together and try another shot for him and her."I want you here with me, like how pictured it, so I don't have to imaging." He doesn't want it to be fake love, he wants it to be real.
