Footsteps Lyrics

Don't even think about reachin' me

I won't be home

Don't even think about stoppin' by

Don't think of me at all

I did, what I had to do

If there was a reason, it was you...

Don't even think about gettin' inside

Footsteps is the last song in the Momma-Son trilogy. The mother sexually abused the son in Alive, he became violent in Once and Footsteps is the end of his journey, he’s in jail. It is remembering the abuse, blaming the abuser for what he became.

This is part of the mamasan trilogy. It started with "Alive" being about a boy being sexually abused by his mother because he looks like his dead father. In the middle is "Once" after the boy was abused he became disturbed I guess and wanted to take his anger out on other people. So he became a murderer. In "Footsteps" i'm pretty sure Eddie said it takes place in a jail cell,so i'm assuming the boy got caught after killing people.

Abuse within ones immediate family. The remembrance of their footsteps down the hall as they were coming for them. The family portraits we hold close to the heart yet the feeling of hurt and the needing of placing them far away so one can heal.

I once heard Eddie Vedder say the Footsteps is part of a trilogy including Once and Alive as well. He actually called it a mini Opera. He then went on to say that the law last song, being Footsteps, actually takes place in a jail cell. Interpretation is open from there...

A man is depressed because his girlfriend broke up with him. He is thinking about the memories of her footsteps in the hallway. He continues to blame her for his depression and impending suicide. He has a picture of her laying on his chest as he takes his life, repeating once again "it was you!"....
