This is a man figuring out his relationship with God/Jesus.

No one told me how bad I'd need you.
But I somehow arrived at that conclusion all by myself.

This song was written with the "tithes and offerings" time at pentecostal/evangelical churches in mind. During these times, the church band generally plays a soothing song to cover up the awkwardness of people feeling pressured to dish out their week's savings to the church and allows the pastor to walk off stage for the band to take the stage and not have to face the congregation and look them in the eye and feel ashamed for taking people's hard-earned money.
