I see this song as a story, the story of a couple that has lost their momentum, hence, "We're going through the motions, 'cause we can't fix what's broken." They know they can't fix their relationship, but they keep trying, I can see the two, breaking up, showing that no longer will they say "Those three empty words" I love you... It's sad, but it's plausible.

its about a guy and a girl who are in a relationship thats lost ist spark,they try so much to relight it again but they cant and he doesnt want to hurt her by doing the thing he thinks is right,'breaking up.'So they try to do all the old things they did when they first feel in love but he knows its not working and all he can do is watch it fail,he comes to the conclusion that their relationship should end.So he stops using those three empty words i love you.
