Taylor Swift: You Belong With Me Meaning

Song Released: 2009
You Belong With Me Lyrics
She's going off about somethin' that you said
She doesn't get your humour like I do
I'm in the room, it's a typical Tuesday night
I'm listening to the kind of music she doesn't like
And...

#1 top rated interpretation:Taylor has obviously known the guy for a long time and they are best friends, but nothing more. When he starts dating another girl, Taylor starts to realize how he'll be better off with her because she knows his music, gets his jokes, and all in all understands him. It's a classic love story interpreted into a song.

#2 top rated interpretation:Shes in highchool obviously.
in love with her mate.
just another highschool drama and with all dramas he has a girlfriend and taylor can not seem to understand why he's dating her.
She can tell that she brings him down and doesnt give him the happiness he deserves.
And she thinks and thinks over and over again why he cant see that theyre perfect for one another

#3 top rated interpretation:This song became legendary, as a typical teenage love story that joins thousands of teen girls on this Earth, but I think that its meaning has gone lost and has been replaced with its incredible popularity in pop music industry.
It's the typical love song about unspoken feeling, so as many other Taylor Swift song. It's about the frustration of loving someone so much and not being able to let them know that if they only opened their eyes they would see true love is the one that you've always had by your side, no matter how far you try to go. Taylor - or should I say, the girl in the song, since this situation is more ficticious than autobiographical, as she said - sees the light shine through the boy she loves, knowing she's the only one who really knows and understands him, but somehow she cannot reach him, because he doesn't know how much she's willing to love him, or he doesn't want to see it.
If we want to consider the video, which can be taken as a little movie, we can also take its happy ever after as a hint to the fact that, in the end, true love finds a way. Anyway, the song is an explosion of feelings: frustration, desire, unfairness, resignation, and still hope. -
Taylor is in love with her friend. But the friend doesn't know and doesn't realize how bad the girl he's dating is for her!
-
You belong with me is about Taylor liking her best friend and neighbour for a while(kinda like me^-^) but she thinks he doesn't like her although he does. He then starts to date this girl (maybe her enemy??) who is cheerleader and is the opposite of Taylor. She is about to confess when he shuts his curtains. Later on he fights/breaks up with the cheerleader and asks Taylor if she is coming to prom and she says no.. but she ends up going anyway.in the end she and her best friend get together and kiss and the annoying brat is out of the picture! This is one of the cutest love stories and its exactly like my life! I LOVE YOU TAYLOR!!
-
It's about how she thinks a guy shouldn't be with a girl who doesn't treat him right
-
Shes in love with her friend!
-
He's dating a bitch & Taylor hates her because she loves him. enough said bitches.
-
It's about a stalker whose obsessed with the football hottie. She claims that his girlfriend doesn't understand him the way she does and goes on to criticize the girlfriend for having more feminine traits than her while the stalker is in the boy's room ("a typical tuesday night," aka sneak into his room and listen to his music like a creeper).
I'm giving the cheerleader a few more days before she dies via stabbing. -
guys seriously watch the muscic video. she likes her best friend. she gets him but hes with another girl whos popular and a cheerleader. he is blind to the fact that she luvs him and she tries to tell him.
-
Taylor means that she wants her guy friend to be more then just a guy friend. Or someone who is popular and you are like an outcast. She wants to be able to express her feelings towards this guy but doesn't know how to tell him without either getting laughed at or shut down.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

This song is about how she likes a guy who doesn't like her back. The guy is dating another girl who doesn't deserve him. Taylor is singing on how they should be a couple instead. I can totally relate. :)
-
when i heard this song i realized i could connect with it. sometimes the guy you love has the wrong person as their partner and us stupid girls are always waiting for him. Not every thing has a happy ending like in the video. she should stop doing that!
-
In a video Taylor said that it was actually about her friend who she had no crush on. He had a girlfriend that was treating him badly and she wanted the girl to know that he didn't like the way she treated him because she didnt want him to get hurt.
-
taylor swift is self conscious about her legs...its why she cant wear short skirts. theres some other stuff in there too but most of it is inconsequential. In fact, its not even a love song.
-
It's about his guy friend, she heard him talking on the phone with his girlfriend saying, "Yes, I love you. No baby, " something like that, then, she started writing: You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upset."
