I always thought this song is about truck drivers. I could not think of a better metaphor for the typical 'over-compensation' of big rigs with chrome, paintwork,dazzling lights etc., than this song title. The references to drugs, long distance driving, cops, working for "a dime" and being 'asked' to work well into your retirement years, sounds like every truck driver I ever new.

Long distance love, simply put. Gener talks about "millions of miles of highway" between the two lovers. Long distance being operative in the song, this could mean physically or mentally. Being detached to someone is long distance too.
