I agree with the first interpretation, although there are references to a light being inside Jimmy and another referring to a light in Jimmy's head. It's quite perplexing and intriguing.

This is really just an honorary thing to remember James 'Jimmy' 'The Reverend' Sullivan by, since many saints were actually sinners who blurred the lines, they led us to accept new things. Just like The Rev has led us to accept more things (think of his death, the way we are not disrespectful towards A7X haters and such), so they have named him a saint personally for the band and their fans.
