A lonely road, crossed another cold state line
Miles away from those I love
Purpose hard to find
While I recall all the words you spoke to me
Can't help but wish that I was there
Back where I'd love to be, oh yeah

Dear God the only...

This song is pretty self-explanatory, but a few parts are open to interpretation

A lonely road, crossed another cold state line
Miles away from those I love
    Purpose hard to find
While I recall all the words you spoke to me
Can't help but wish that I was there
Back where I'd love to be, oh yeah

(Talking about how he's on the road touring and missing the ones he loves back home, and he's thinking about the words his girl spoke to him before he left, and wishing he was back)

Dear God the only thing I ask of you
Is to hold her when I'm not around
When I'm much too far away
We all need that person who can be true to you
But I left her when I found her
And now I wish I'd stayed
'Cause I'm lonely and I'm tired
I'm missing you again, oh no
    Once again

(He's asking God to keep her safe from harm when he isn't there to protect her, he's saying we all need the one true to you but he left her and is regretting it.)

There's nothing here for me on this barren road
There's no one here while the city sleeps
And all the shops are closed
Can't help but think of the times I've had with you
Pictures and some memories will have to help me through, oh yeah

(Saying there's no future for him touring on these shows like this, and the only thing he thinks about is the times he's had with his girl, and how they are the only thing that can help him through it)

Dear God the only thing I ask of you is
To hold her when I'm not around,
When I'm much too far away
We all need that person who can be true to you
I left her when I found her
And now I wish I'd stayed
'Cause I'm lonely and I'm tired
I'm missing you again oh no
    Once again

(He's asking God to keep her safe from harm when he isn't there to protect her, he's saying we all need the one true to you but he left her and is regretting it.)

Some search, never finding a way
    Before long, they waste away
I found you, something told me to stay
I gave in, to selfish ways
And how I miss someone to hold
    When hope begins to fade...

(Saying some search for their one true love but end up failing and dying out. He found his true love and knew he should stay but wanted to tour instead and is now greatly wishing he hadn't because he doesn't have her with him and is starting to lose hope that this tour is worth something.)

A lonely road, crossed another cold state line
Miles away from those I love
    Hope is hard to find

Dear God the only thing I ask of you is
To hold her when I'm not around,
When I'm much too far away
We all need the person who can be true to you
I left her when I found her
And now I wish I'd stayed
'Cause I'm lonely and I'm tired
I'm missing you again oh no
    Once again

(And these last two I've already interpreted, hope this helps anyone!)

It tells me a story about a man who has made a bad decision in his life & went to prison. He had wished he would have stayed with her & not left. If he hadn't gone he wouldn't be on this lonely road he's on.

This beautiful song is about how the band feel when they are in tour and how they miss their loved ones. As they say in the song: it's "a lonely road".
The band is asking God to take care of their loved ones during the tours and the hard life of a famous.

I agree with all your basic interpretations but the only dispute I have is that he may have lost her because he says gave in to selfish ways. Military service and band touring is not selfish if it supports your loved ones. Maybe he is talking about an affair on the road?

I believe it is about the Afghan war.

I think it's about a man, who finds a woman & lets her go, & regrets it. So, he asks God, to watch her so nothing happens to her

I think it's about a Man (M. Shadows) finding a woman & is feeling guilty for letting her go. So, he asks God to make sure she doesn't get hurt or find someone else.

If you're a Christian, it's basically "praying" to your God to save you. I don't have a certain religion, but I do, however, think there's a higher power. I'm not religious at all, but I am a metalhead. My favorite band of all time is Slayer, but I do like Black Sabbath and all the other classics. Avenged Sevenfold is what I just discovered and they're f**kin' awesome! :D

I think it's basically telling you that when you don't follow your heart to your loved one(s) that you soon grow cold and you learn to regret it.. I agree with all of the answers above... this song is open to anyone's thoughts. You could interpret it however you wish to. But I think the basic concept is love and praying who you love is okay when you're not there with her/him/them.

On a lighter note: My boyfriend got me to listen to this song and I fell in love with it at first listen. It's just amazing and every word has meaning behind it. I love you, baby.

Most (If not all) of the answers above are correct but here's what I think it's also about:

The Rev... They said "This song is dedicated to Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan" at the Welcome to the Family FL tour and then they played Dear God... May he rest in peace for all eternity...

Simple its about missing the one you love and left behind while being in the military or just on the road.

i think its a song about lost loves in general, like me and this chick met at a show and we fell for each other but i had a woman and she had a man but we wanted to be together but never persued it, and now i wished i had made it different but there is still hope for me.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

Dear God is about someone who is leaving home and people you love for a while, whether it be a music tour or military purposes (the music video shows a music tour as the reason). The song asks for God's help to look over someone he loves "Dear God the only thing I ask of you Is to hold her when I'm not around When I'm much too far away We all need that person who can be true to you But I left her when I found her And now I wish I'd stayed 'Cause I'm lonely and I'm tired I'm missing you again, oh no Once again"

I believe this song is about people who are away from their homes/loved ones for long periods of time (such as musicians on tour).

"A lonely road, crossed another cold state line
Miles away from those I love, purpose hard to find
While I recall all the words you spoke to me
Can't help but wish that I was there
Back where I'd love to be, oh yeah"

    Also in this verse:

"Dear God the only thing I ask of you is
to hold her when I'm not around,
when I'm much too far away"

The person who is far from their home hope that their loved one(s) are safe when they're away from each other.

This is the most obvious song ever it is all about love and when you leaving praying that person is safe so you can return to them.
