Outside Lyrics

And you bring me to my knees again
All the times, that I can beg you please, in vain
All the times that I felt insecure, for you
And I leave my burdens out the door
[Chorus]
I'm on the outside
I'm looking in
I can see through you
See your...

He is begging her, in his knees, she left him because she loves him too much and fears this love and gettimg hurt again... She is scared and damaged , insecure and he sees in her the truth and accepts it but she does not acvept her own... She is just like him, damaged, ugly on the inside, broken... He truly loves her, like nothing he ever loved before and he sees all this in her and accepts it without judgement but she judges herself too much, this is hurting them both and keeping them apart... He is driven insane by the love for her but she trusted too many before and cannot trust him, he is the real deal but she cannot see it because of her past

Like mentioned above- it could mean many different things depending on what the listener is going through. Personally, I can see if relating to seeing addiction or alcoholism for what it truly is and finally breaking free from the torture and abuse that comes with the struggle of addiction. Or maybe a color blind person finally gets vision correcting glasses

After Reading these comments I have come to the conclusion of what the meaning of this song is. No wonder!, it is a beautiful and lyrically genius song. It is relative to whatever the listener hears in or from it . Any of these interpretations here work . Truly a masterful work in art as it evokes deep emotion .

It is about the relation between the music industry and the people who pirate songs. The'pirates' are on the outside trying to get in; reminds me of the days of Napster and LimeWire, and burning CDs. The debate about why should we buy a full album if we just like one song. But at that time, we were brought to our knees and had to buy the CD.

Its about the struggles of a relationship if that is whats going on in your life at present.
Its about Drug Addiction, if you have stumbled.
Its about Physical or Mental abuse, if that is what you have had or currently experiencing...
It is about Depression and self internalizing your life struggles...
It is about what pains You!
The greatness of a tremendously crafted song and music is that it can be any, or all of those things.

Very interesting Interpretations here. But I think you have it all wrong. Not about a woman/man relationship at all. It's about Depression. He's talking about Depression as if it were "a person" or part of himself. If you don't suffer from depression, you most likely won't agree.

He's telling a story of a relationship he had where he was Trauma bonded to a girl and after leaving he came to the realization she wasn't a good person.
He's finally on the outside looking in and sees her true colors, that she's ugly inside(not a good person) ugly like him meaning he doesn't think much of his appearance cause she made him think he wasn't good enough for her.

Talking about his frustration of wanting to be good enough for god. Putting his hopes in the relationship and as it says leaving his burdens at the door etc.
then feeling like he's on the outside no matter what he does. And even if he was perfect like god he'd still feel ugly cause he may think that god may feel ugly for the decisions he's had to make for the greater good. There truth in sometimes you just got to pick the lesser of the evils. So hence just like me.

Well this song was the first song that I heard after leaving the court house while going through a divorce, my ex wife was a horrible person full of lies and cheating. So this done to means how I tried to love her but she never returned it , so I can see through you your ugly like I am because she turned me into a ugly person like her , well that what it means to me he is a great singe song writer love you man

I feel it's about that inner place we all have. That deep place we all hide from others. Sadness, depression, loneliness..whatever it may be. The person is saying "I see you. I SEE that deep space you are hiding from others"

I don't know actual interpretation of it. I'm not Aaron.
But for me, I relate this to childhood abuse and seeing my father from the outside. As my father,I viewed him as powerful, masculine, the way I should act,and seek in my husband. As an adult woman now, I see it for what it is. Yet as a child of God, who is sinful... I am ugly too.

A person, depicted as a man in the song, yet it could also be a woman, who has risen above their addiction. Yet, someone in their life, someone they care about, is suffering from the same pains and distresses that they themselves once felt. They feel like a stranger, looking at their friend from a different perspective, all the while begging them to stop hurting them selves. To listen to their words of encouragement and to change. They continue to try to reach out to that person, to tell them that they are not so different. To let them know that they too can rise above. But, just as they begin to believe they’re making a difference, they realize that their words have all been in vain, because the friend does not have the strength that they themselves had. They can’t see their value, nor can they truly understand the pain that they cause those who care about them, as they continue their self-destructive behavior.
It’s a very deep song with much meaning for me. It’s never too late to tell someone in pain, even if self-inflicted, that we care. It’s never too late to try.

Haven't seen this interpretation yet so I'll add my 2 cents: I believe this song is about the abuse he suffered by one of his parents. Either his mother or father. While it could also very well be of a relationship, I see clearcut heavy correlations between a child reacting to their parent's harsh ways. A parent's disappointment. A child trying to live up to what the parents' want and coming up short always due to their unrealistic expectations. This child realizes his situation and looks forward to tomorrow where things will hopefully be better.

This song is about addiction and the feeling of wanting to fall off the wagon.

When I heard the line “I’m on the outside. I’m looking in”, the first thing I thought of was derealization, a psychologic phenomenon in which a person who experiences anxiety and/or depression feels as if they are outside of their life looking in as if watching a movie or playing a video game. They feel detached and emotionally distant, as if they are losing their self image.

My interpretation is that the song is about someone who is depressed or has some sort of mental health problem. He buries his problems and has become dependent on his girlfriend/wife (let’s say girlfriend) in order to deal with his problems. Having sex releases brain chemicals which make you feel good but only temporarily. It also feels good to know you have someone and are not alone.

I think the outside lyric could also refer to being outside a window looking in on /girlfriend with someone else. He realizes she did it because she is also insecure like him. He understands but it still hurts. Without his girlfriend he becomes very depressed at night because he doesn’t have anyone in his bed laying next to him. Yet he feels tomorrow will be okay.

In short, my first thoughts are that the song is about someone with mental health problems using someone else as a coping mechanism only to have that person leave your life. A very difficult situation to be in and one that I’m sure many can relate to.
