Gold Rush Lyrics

Gleaming, twinkling
Eyes like sinking ships on waters
So inviting, I almost jump in
But I don't like a gold rush, gold rush
I don't like anticipating my face in a red flush
I don't like that anyone would die to feel your touch
Everybody...

The song begins with the singer describing the eyes of the person she is talking about. Using words like “gleaming, twinkling” and comparing the person's eyes to sinking ships on waters so inviting, wanting to jump in but then stopping herself. Throughout the whole song she expresses her disinterest for the gold rush, referring to the person.

The California gold rush brought in people from several countries just to seize the opportunity to obtain gold. This event represents the person the song is about. With her constantly repeating the phrase “Everybody wants you” and “Everybody wonders what it would be like to love you”. In this case the gold refers to the love from the person. During the gold rush, several individuals would do anything just to acquire the gold. Similar to that, she claims that everybody wants to love this person.

Furthermore, she contradicts herself for the duration of the whole song. The singer expresses her dislike of having a crush. “I don’t like anticipating my face in a red flush” “I don’t like that falling feels like flying ‘til the bone crush”. She states that she loathes the fact that everybody wants this person and their love and affection. However, as the song progresses into a higher key with violins playing and a falling feeling like melody, she suddenly stops herself. She ponders on what it must be like to be like the person. Stating how his/her hair falls perfectly into place comparing it to dominos. Moreover, she wonders how it would be like to love that person, imagining different scenarios of them together. The verse then comes to an end when she talks about it all fading to gray due to the fact that she and the “gold rush” will never happen.

The song can be seen as a daydream, thinking and dreaming of that person then suddenly snapping back to reality and getting slapped in the face with the truth. Additionally, her ending the song the same way she started it can represent her constant endless falling into the daydream wanting to become another individual crushing on this person.
